Tourism Industry Coincil Tasmania

Welcome to 2026!

As the TICT returns for another year supporting our industry, we do so hoping that you had a safe, enjoyable and prosperous Christmas/New Year period. Certainly as I got out and about with the family, it was fantastic to see not only plenty of visitors but also Tasmanian enjoying our hospitality venues and events. This is a good sign for the rest of the year, and I don't believe I'm under-estimating in saying that 2026 promises to be a truly historic year for our industry.

Our strong Tassie contingent will be heading to Fremantle in March to represent our island at the national awards, the two new Spirit of Tasmania vessels are expected to be operating from October, and in that same month ATEC's Meeting Place will converge on Hobart, one of Australia's major travel trade events. Add to that, the planning that now needs to get underway in earnest to ensure our entire state benefits from the Macquarie Point Stadium and we're in for a very busy year. The TICT intends to be at the forefront of ensuring our industry makes the most of these opportunities.

At the same time, we expect the May State Budget to be a challenging one and our focus is on demonstrating the contribution our industry makes to the broader Tasmanian economy. For now, please ensure that you have all the key dates saved for our major events including the Tasmanian Tourism Conference and Women's Collective (detailed below) and also check out our new Cruise Tourism Spotlight that was publicly launched just prior to Christmas in partnership with TasPorts.

As I mentioned in my end of year update, the TICT will be making a submission to the Tasmanian Government's Short Stay Levy Bill. Thank you to those of you who have got in touch with your concerns and impacts. Our first Business Sentiment Survey includes a question on this towards the end so please make sure you complete the survey and that question - it's very important for our advocacy.

Finally, the last component of the Spirit Support Package was announced at the end of last year. You can read more about the Spirit Readiness Grants here.

For those heading along to the Foo Fighters in Launceston later this week - enjoy and it promises to be a busy time for our operators in the north. But that's just the start, with Festivale, Party in the Paddock and the Launceston Cup still to come among other events. Enjoy and stay safe.
