From the CEO - 27/05/24
It was great to get out and visit a number of newly accredited and long-time accredited operators in Launceston and the West Tamar region last week. I was also able to speak with local media to urge Tasmanians to get out and experience something new in the regions this winter and to support our tourism operators. I'm looking forward to getting over to the west coast and Devonport next week, followed by a visit to Freycinet with the Regional Tourism Organisation.
The cost of doing business and insurance continue to be the top two challenges raised by our operators, and last week the TICT joined forces with the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Tasmanian Hospitality Association to call on the Tasmanian Government to act on its insurance tax. While we understand the complexities around insurance are being felt nationally, there is something the Tasmanian Government could do to help ease the pain. Don't forget, we're hosting a Skilled in Sixty webinar on the topic of insurance next week so if you haven't registered, we encourage you to do so.
The other major announcement from the Tasmanian Government last week was its review of kunanyi/Mount Wellington. You can read Minister Abetz's media statement here. kunanyi holds a special place in the hearts of all Tasmanians, as well as being one of the most visited natural attractions in the state. It deserves the same attention, priority and long-term planning as our other natural treasures, and the TICT will provide input as the review progresses.
Also, next week we’ll be launching exciting information about the 2024 Tasmanian Tourism Conference ‘Future Focus: Inspire. Innovate. Collaborate’ - so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for this!
