From the CEO - 25/10/24
It's been a difficult 24 hours for our industry following the release of the way forward on berthing facilities for the new Spirit of Tasmania vessels. The Premier Jeremy Rockliff released the report in Devonport yesterday and has provided an update for the tourism industry here.
The revised timeframes have come as a shock and are disappointing and frustrating to us an industry. The TICT will continue to focus on and advocate for alternative ways to realise the increased capacity into the state that the new vessels were due to bring. This includes looking at the levers that we have, including increased day sailings through the existing Spirits throughout winter and through our airports. Events will also play a critical role in giving people a reason to visit our state.
Yesterday, the Premier announced a Tourism and Hospitality Support package which includes a commitment to increased day sailings, new routes and frequency via air, more money for events, a spirit preparedness fund, and an intrastate marketing campaign including vouchers for Tasmanians. More information is outlined in the Premier's industry update.
The TICT will immediately work with the Regional Tourism Organisations, Tasmanian Hospitality Association, State Growth, Tourism Tasmania and Events Tasmania to have input into how these measures are rolled out with speed and effectiveness.
We expect ongoing public transparency and reporting from the Government about how the new berthing facilities are progressing, to ensure this situation is never repeated.
