Tourism & the Pulp Mill - Recent Developments
During 2007, as the public debate surrounding the Bell Bay Pulp Mill raged, the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT) sought the views of tourism operators on this issue through consultation with affected operators and a statewide survey.
In consultation with other key groups including: Northern Tasmania Development (NTD), Launceston Tamar Valley Tourism Association (LTVTA), and Wine Industry Tasmania (WIT); the TICT made a submission to the State Government outlining some issues that need to be addressed should the Pulp Mill proceed.
The submission of August 2007 made a number of recommendations, primarily around three themes:
- Impact on the Environment
- Impact on Roads
- Impact on the Tasmanian Brand
Since that time there has been significant activity from TICT, NTD, LTVTA and WIT on these issues. The four associations joined together to recently to provide operators with a briefing on what is happening to minimize the impacts on the environment, roads and the Tasmanian Brand should the Pulp Mill proceed.
